What is Sport Psychology?

Sport Psychology is a fairly new branch of psychology that specializes in working with the athletic population to do with their mental training. Sport Psychology not only includes understanding and working on the athlete’s mental skills to enhance the athletic performance but also, rather more importantly, works on participation and the overall development of the child. This field also puts a lot of focus on the child’s participation in sport and its effects on holistic development of a child. A sport psychologist, through the process called ‘Mental Training’, works with athletes to help them develop mental skills to improve their athletic performance in the competitive environment.

It is of utmost importance to understand that while working with athletes,‘one shoe fits all’ approach cannot be implemented as performance is dependent on an interplay of several tenets like technique, talent, socio-economic factors, etc. and each athletes brings to the arena a unique mix of these characteristics. Athletes might not possess all the mental toughness skills that the sport demands but that’s the good news, these skills can be developed through regular practice of mental training.

Athletes are constantly a part of high-performance situations and are expected to be at their A game always. These high-performance situations are extremely demanding. Interestingly, managing these situations can be learnt. Furthermore, these new skills learnt by an athlete can be applied not only in sports but beyond. For example, self-confidence is an eminent personal skill which will cascade from the sport arena to academics, social life, and professional life.

Sport is not only about medals, tournaments, training camps, rather it goes far beyond. Through participation in sport and mental training, an athlete not only learns skills required for performance enhancement but also important life skills like discipline, time management, self-esteem, resilience, team work, etc. which has an impact on overall mental well-being of an individual.
